“Intervention Classrooms” are now important facilities for all Schools. Grays Farm Primary Academy was using a 27-year-old timber-framed modular classroom building for “intervention classrooms” and it was clear to all the building was not fit for purpose.
They had the grant to replace the dilapidated timber-framed classrooms and contacted Portable Facilities to ask our friendly expert advice on what options were available.
Portable Facilities and the School Business Manager arranged a meeting at the School and from this discussion, it became clear that the best option would be a fully refurbished modular classroom meeting all current building and Ofsted regulations including BB93.
The School also wanted Portable Facilities to project manage the contract in its entirety from the initial planning application, CAD drawings, Building Control Submissions, Temporary Roadways, Groundworks, Crane Hire, Installation of Refurbished Mobile classroom and lastly construction of external ramps and steps.
In early July planning permission was granted and works could begin, firstly we had to protect the playground from construction traffic so 320m of temporary roadway was delivered and installed across the school playground. Once this roadway was installed demolishing commenced of the existing dilapidated mobile classroom.
Because of the close proximity of some mature maple trees on the site we instructed our independent structural engineer to carry out a ground and geo survey.
The recommendations after this survey were for foundations pads excavations at 2m deep; this information was submitted to and duly approved by building control.
Just 4 weeks after planning permission was granted the concrete foundations had been poured and 7 days later the refurbished steel-framed modular classroom was delivered to the School and craned into position ready for the new term.
The end result was a modern, clean building refurbished and installed by us saving the School money and just as importantly with absolute minimal disruption to pupils. What was a wreck of an old building is now something for the School to really be proud of and the pupils are much happier.
